Bad News For Kenyans Few Days After Wearing Of Mask Was Rendered Optional By Ministry Of Health

Chinese health officials reported nearly 3,400 Covid-19 cases, more than doubling the previous day's total, prompting lockdowns in virus hotspots as the country battles its worst outbreak in two years. As nearly 19 provinces battle clusters of the Omicron and Delta variants, authorities in Shanghai have closed schools and have ordered the closure of several northeastern cities.

Kenya's Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe announced on Thursday that face masks were no longer required in open public spaces, and that full in-person worship for vaccinated people had been restored. Kenyans are encouraged to use face masks at indoor functions. For immunized individuals, the quarantine will be lifted and full in-person worship would be reinstated. According to the health secretary, tens of thousands of lives have been saved. Because of the low positive rate, spectators will be permitted back into venues without masks.

Jilin, Yanji, Siping, and Dunhua were all shut down on Thursday and Friday in Jilin province. On Friday, Changchun, a nine-million-person industrial powerhouse, was shut down. As of Sunday, the city had seen over 500 instances of the Omicron strain. When clusters of the virus were discovered in China, the government imposed a rigorous 'zero-Covid' policy.
