The Governor of Texas, Mr. Greg Abbott issued an executive order prohibiting state government entities such as counties, public schools districts, government officials and public health authorities from requiring face mask wearing.
In a press release, the Governor said, "Texans, not government, should decide their best health practices, which is why face masks will not be mandated by public school districts or government entities. We can continue to mitigate Covid-19 while defending Texans. Liberty to choose whether or not they mask up."
According to the current face mask wearing guidelines, the public schools are required to wear masks until the 4th of June 2021. However, the new executive order requires that no teacher, student, parent or staff member will be needed to wear a face mask on school grounds .
More to that, the overconfident Governor proposed a fine of up to $1,000 for any local government or officials trying to impose a face mask mandate. But the order, however is said not to include state supported living centers, state department of justice facilities and county and municipal jails according to the press release.
This order comes less than a week after the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released updated guidance on Covid-19 prevention measures. It required vaccinated people to be both out and indoors without masks in most cases. Although other states have brought back wearing face masks in recent weeks with New York, California and Michigan announcing that they would lift such requirements.
Last year, Texas was among the earliest states to reopen following the nationwide Corona virus shutdown in March and April as the Governor let his executive order lapse on 1st May of that year.
