Why Malabsorption is a major sign of Celiac disease and how it can cause cancer and Infertility

Celiac disease is a serious autoimmune condition that occurs in genetically predisposed persons whereby an ingestion of gluten leads to damage in the small intestine.Gluten is a type of protein found in wheat,barley,rye.

It is also called Celiac Sprue or gluten sensitive enteropathy.Gluten causes a reaction which damages the lining of the small intestine and prevents it from absorbing some nutrients or malabsorption.


There are several types of the Celiac disease such as:

*Classical Celiac disease-which manifests as signs and symptoms of malabsorption.

*Non classical Celiac disease-a person may have mild gastrointestinal problems without clear symptoms if malabsorption.

*Silent Celiac disease-it is usually asymptomatic that is it does not present any symptoms but damage to the small intestine is ongoing.

*Potential Celiac disease- a person develops typical blood antibodies but without damage to the small intestines.

*Refractory celiac disease-it is characterised by recurrent and persistent malabsorption symptoms.

A person is at a higher risk of getting Celiac disease if.

1.They have type 1 Diabetes.

2.There is a history of Celiac disease in their family.

3.They have autoimmune thyroid disease or Addison's disease.

4.Microscopic Colitis.

5.If they have The Turner syndrome or Down

syndrome.

Celiac disease can cause symptoms such as

*Diarrhoea.

*Fatigue.

*Weight loss.

*Bloating and gas.

*Abdominal pain.

*Nausea and vomiting.

*Constipation.

*Bloating and gas.

*Bone and joint pain.

*Liver and binary tract disorders.

*Itchy skin rash.

*Infertility or recurrent miscarriages.

*Peripheral neuropathy.

*Seizures or migraines.


In children,Celiac disease can cause symptoms such as Diarrhoea,deacreased appetite, stomach ache, bloating,poor growth,weight loss,short stature,failure to thrive,pale,foul smelling or fatty stool,constipation,delayed puberty and growth.


Celiac disease if untreated can result into more serious complications like Malnutrition,Cancer,Bone weakening,Infertility and miscarriage,Nervous system problems.
