Reactions As 79 Years Old Suffering From Dementia Reunites With Family

The family of 79-year-old man Henry Ngondu Kamau is relieved after they reunited with him yesterday evening. They got a call from the police station to ascertain whether the man they had was their kin and indeed he was. The family is grateful to everyone who helped them bring him home.

"The family is grateful to everyone who helped us find Mzee and we wouldn't have done it without you. Social media is indeed a powerful tool."

In the study, the researchers tracked data from 1,401 seniors, who had been followed for up to 14 years by the Rush Memory and Aging Project at the Rush Alzheimer’s Disease Center in Chicago. The participants, whose average age was 81 and of whom approximately three-quarters were female, wore a watch-like device that tracked mobility.

The study highlights the nationwide reach of dementia, which affects not only those with the disease, but their families and communities as well. As the population ages during the next few decades, the prevalence of Alzheimer's disease will increase several-fold unless effective interventions are discovered and implemented data underscore the urgency of research .
