The small fish with a more compressed body(Omena) is also known as 'mukene' in local dialect by the people around the Lake Region. Omena has a lateral line that runs all through to the lower parts of its caudal peduncle. It is a freshwater ray-finned fish which is nocturnal. The scientific name of omena is "Rastrineobola argentea" .
According to many researchers, omena has a wide range of health benefits to human beings and livestock. Amongst them are the following:

2. The calcium ions present in omena is capable of improving the quality and quantity of egg production in chickens.
