Stomach Ulcers: Causes, Symptoms And Treatment

Stomach ulcers are sores that develop on the inside lining of the stomach. Below are the causes, symptoms and treatment for them.

A microscopic view of Helicobacter Pylori

A bacteria called Helicobacter Pylori is the most common cause of stomach ulcers. This bacterium interferes with the controlled and balanced acids in the stomach by making the body produce excessive amounts of stomach acid that slowly but surely erode the walls of the stomach causing ulcers. Other causes of stomach ulcers are; long term use of ibuprofen, naproxen sodium, alcohol, excessive salt intake and smoking, among others.

Firstly, it's only a trained health professional that can make a diagnosis of stomach ulcers by examining your stool, or better still an endoscopy or an x-ray test can be used. The commonest symptom of stomach ulcers is frequent stomach pain, nausea, appetite changes, blood spots in stool, vomiting, belching, among others.

Treatment for stomach ulcers varies based on the cause. A health professional can prescribe proton-pump inhibitors(PPIs) to reduce stomach acid. To have any chance of killing the bacteria causing the ulcers, antibiotics can be used, however, the patient must strictly adhere and take all medicines as prescribed by the doctor.
