Tips on how to maintain a healthy liver.
The liver is a powerhouse of an organ.It performs various functions ranging from production of proteins,cholesterol and bile to storage of vitamins,minerals and even carbohydrates.
The liver also breaks down toxins e.g alcohol,medication and natural byproducts of metabolism.
Here are ways to a healthy liver:
Eat a balanced diet
Avoid high calorie meals,saturated fats,refined carbs and sugars.Eat fiber rich foods from fresh fruits,vegetables,whole grain breads,rice and cereals.
Limit the amount of red meat,take low fat milk and small amounts of cheese.Instead of saturated fats you can opt for monounsaturated fats and polyunsaturated fats e.g vegetable oil,nuts,seeds and fish.
Exercise regularly: Physical activity helps to burn triglycerides for fuel and can also reduce liver fat.Exercise also helps to maintain a healthy weight.
Avoid alcohol: Alcoholic beverages can lead to many health problems.They can also damage liver cells and scar your liver.
Get vaccinated: There are vaccines for Hepatitis A and Hepatitis B.
Control you blood sugar levels: Poorly controlled blood sugar levels can damage your liver and at the same time can lead to diabetes related complications.
Avoid toxins: Toxins can injure liver cells.You should therefore limit direct contact with toxins from cleaning and aerosol products,insectcides,chemical and additives.Make sure to wear a mask,ensure the room is well ventilated and dont smoke because smoking increases the risk of liver cirrhosis and liver cancer.
Follow directions on all medications: Taking your medicines incorrectly either taking too much,taking the wrong type or mixing can damage your liver.You are therefore advised to never mix alcohol with other drugs and medications even if they are not taken at the same time.
Above all these remember that hydration is essential,so drink a lot of clean safe water.
