7 foods to avoid if you have Arthritis

Arthritis is an autoimmune disorder. Autoimmune meaning it occurs when the Immune system mistakenly attacks its own body’s tissue. It causes swelling and tenderness of one or more joints due to inflammation.

Symptoms include;

.Tender warm swollen joints

.Joint stiffness that is usually worse in the mornings and after inactivity

.Fatigue, fever and loss of appetite

Foods to avoid include;

1.Sugars and refined carbohydrates

Foods such as pastries, candy, soda, and chocolates trigger the release of proteins in the body called cytokines, which cause inflammation. Instead include more healthier option in the diet such more fruits and vegetable intake.

2.Processed foods

Processed foods have trans fats to help preserve these baked goods and pre-packaged meals snacks. These trans fats trigger systemic inflammation.


Alcohol is associated with many health problems such as cancer and liver cirrhosis. Alcohol consumption in large amounts can increase the risk of having arthritis. Instead one should work on eat balanced diets, engage in physical activities and adequate rest as a more healthy lifestyle.

4.Dairy products

Dairy products contain a type of protein that irritates the tissue around the joints. It is therefore advice able to provide the body with this protein from food such as beans, lentils and nuts.

5.Fried red meat and other fried foods

These types of fried foods contain saturated and trans fats which accelerate inflammation effects in the body leading to pain in the joints. Excessive intake of red meat is also responsible for gout whereby there is accumulation of uric acid on a joint leading to a lot of pain. It is therefore advisable to reduce excessive intake of red meat.

6.Salt and preservatives

Salt and other preservatives used to increase shelf life of food contain high sodium levels which increases inflammation. It is therefore preferable to take low sodium in our diets.

7.Omega-6 fatty acids

Omega-6 fatty acids are unhealthy fats or bad fats found to trigger inflammation hence one should replace their diets with omega-3 fatty acids which are unsaturated fats. Omega-3 fatty acids are found in fish and help with joint pain relief by reducing inflammation.

Alongside pain-reducing medications for treatment, are various types of foods that are highly advisable to take to reduce inflammation referred to as functional foods.

Functional foods are foods or ingredients that may provide a health benefit beyond the traditional nutrients it contains. Examples;

.Foods high in fibre

.Phenols obtained from nuts such as cashew nuts, ground nuts, walnuts and macadamia nuts

.Garlic known for anti-cancer, anti-inflammatory and antioxidative effects

.Ginger which exert beneficial effects against inflammation and oxidative stress

.Spices such as turmeric, cloves and cinnamon

.Green tea

.Fruits such avocado, cherries, berries and grapes
