Why You Need To Eat Matumbo(Tripe)

Matumbo which is known as tripe in English is a type of organ meat made from the edible stomach lining of farm animals such as cows and sheep.A majority of Kenyans relish in eating the stewed or boiled version of a cow/sheep’s stomach lining.

Beef tripe from cows is one of the most commonly eaten varieties. Tripe is normally tough meat that needs to be properly prepared in order to become edible. It’s commonly cooked by moist heat methods, such as boiling or stewing.

There is a common misconception that matumbo (tripe) does not have any kind of nutritional value but that is not correct.

Matumbo(tripe) is very rich in nutritional value.

Rich in Protein

Matumbo(tripe) contains all the nine essential amino acids that your body needs in order to do things like building muscle and regulating immune function.

Helps in Weight Loss

Matumbo is rich in protein and will therefore help you in losing excess weight by making you feel full for longer meaning that you are unlikely to overeat when your stomach is stuffed with protein.

Matumbo does not contain a lot of calories and that is the reason why it is recommended for people watching their weight.

It’s Cheap

Unlike other types of meat such as beef and chicken, matumbo is cheaper and affordable with a kilo of matumbo costing about ksh 300.

It’s a Good Source of Vitamins

Matumbo is a good source of Vitamins such as Niacin (B3), Folate (B9) and Cobalamin (B12). Niacin is an essential nutrient as it lowers the cholesterol levels, eases one's arthritis, helps in treating psoriasis and lowers your risk of developing a heart disease.

Folate is vital as it is needed in making red and white blood cells in the bone marrow while B12 is essential as it prevents megaloblastic anaemia and keeps the body’s nerves and blood cells healthy.
