Here is Easy Money: Meru Man Earning KES15,000 Per Week in Chicken Slaughter Business

Slow Meat: The Molo Mushunu Chicken Sets the Pace #endthecageage

In Kenya, chicken meat has long been a favourite dish. However, when times and finances change, many people are obliged to purchase ready-to-eat chicken from supermarkets and hotels rather than slaughtering it themselves.

Lucrative Chicken Meat Business

It is in this transition that Lazarus Thuku, 32, spotted a business potential. Lazurus, like many other business owners, is a jack of all crafts. He's dabbled in a variety of businesses, including Jua Kali, building, agriculture, street vending, event decorating, and events catering. Then he came upon chicken slaughtering.

A close friend introduced the father of four to the industry. Lazarus grew interested and apprenticed under the instruction of his friend. He'd perfected the technique of murdering a chicken in under three minutes in just two weeks.

Collaboration with an Experienced Person

At the start of the journey, he collaborated with an acquaintance who had supply networks with nearby hotels and shops. But, like any successful salesman, Lazarus quickly built his clientele.

Over time, he established a reputation for himself in Meru and Nairobi, landing contracts with famous hotels, supermarkets, and poultry producers.

Lazarus slaughters the chicken at his clients' facilities or his suppliers' chicken farms, tailored to the needs.

After 5 years, his remarkable base of consistent clients pays him KES15,000 each week. Lazarus also mentions that he is unable to enjoy holidays.

"You'll never find me celebrating when other people are since that's when I'm the busiest." However, I make up for it during sluggish months like June, which also happens to be my birthday month."

To supplement his income, Lazarus intends to raise his chickens soon.

Reason Why You Should Invest in Chicken Business

The poultry industry is a significant business in Kenya. It's much better now that large restaurants and hotels have opened up. Kenyans are known to devour eggs and chicken meat, and there is never a lack of demand for poultry goods outside of restaurants and hotels.

Chicken does have the biggest number of animals consumed and is the fastest expanding meat sector of all the meats we eat.
