Largest Forest In Western Kenya

The amazing beautiful forest is called Kakamega forest It is located in Kakamega county,malabar sub county. Kakamega forest covers 4,468 hectares of land which experiences tropical rainforest.The forest was gazetted in 1933 as a trust forest ,later in 1985 the forest become a natural forest. The forest is managed by Kenya Forest Service with conjunction with the Kenya Wildlife service.

The forest has well drained,deep, heavily leached clay loam and clay soil for support of the plants and the entire ecosystem. It also experiences rainfall of approximately 2,000mm per year. The forest is commonly know it's diversity of trees with 16 bird species and provide traditional herbal medicine for the luhya community such as Ishikuma tree used for treatment of cough, malaria and allergies

The forest serve as an important ecological service such as a water catchment areas for River Yala and Isiukhu river which provide water for the people of Kakamega town .It also a significant natural habitat for conservation of flora and fauna.

The forest experience decline due to deforestation of the forest.
