Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua Clarifies on Shamba System

On September 28, Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua slammed the media, stating that it misrepresented his comments on the contentious Shamba System's reintroduction.

The DP made it clear during a speech at the opening of the annual ASK Nairobi International Trade Fair that the Shamba system would not imply that farmers would be permitted to cultivate land within the existing forests.

Instead, he added, the farmers plant trees alongside their crops on designated forest grounds and leave when the trees are fully grown.

"When I was in Baringo, I did inform the Kenyan populace that we have a significant afforestation effort. A large portion of the forest reserve has been designated for tree planting, so we will mobilize farmers to help us plant trees where there are none now and care for them while they farm until the trees reach maturity, at which point the forest can continue to develop.
