Rigathi Clarifies How He Was Misinterpreted Over His Remarks in Baringo

Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua addressed the press on Wednesday, September 28, claiming that they misinterpreted his statement on the reintroduction of the controversial Shamba system.

In an address during the opening of the annual ASK Nairobi International Trade Fair, the DP clarified that the Shamba system does not mean that farmers will be invited to farm in abandoned forests.

He explained that farmers are instead planting trees on allocated forest land next to their crops and clearing them once the trees are mature.

“When I was in Baringo, I announced to the people of Kenya that we had a serious reforestation program. There is a lot of land within the forest reserve set aside for tree planting and we will mobilize farmers to help us plant trees in the areas where there are no trees and take care of them while they are cultivate until the trees are mature and the forest can then continue to grow.

He also addressed the press directly, urging them to report objectively and break the habit of twisting words to fit narratives.
