Check Out The Dam In Kirinyaga That Will Transform Rice Farming In The Region

Thiba Dam is a project that is set to boost rice farming in Mwea region .The dam will also help to control floods in the region.The project was launched by president Uhuru Kenyatta in 2017.The actual construction began in 2018 and it was set to be completed in 45 months.

The German multinational Strabag international was contracted to build this dam. The dam is 40m long and 1km wide.The dam will occupy 542acres of land with a storage capacity of 15 million cubic centimeters.The project is funded by the government of Kenya in partnership with Japan international cooperation agency.

The construction was suspended in 2019 due to lack of funds.The construction activities resumed in 2020 after the government released 6 million dollars.

A total of 5000 households will benefit by the water provided by this new reservoir.The dam is also be equipped with a spillway to prevent flooding during the rainy season.The total cost of construction is 16 billion Kenyan shillings.
