5 Largest Gameparks in Africa, See East Africa Ranking

The idea of establishing National parks and reserves in Africa took place in 1925 by setting aside land for Virunga National park in Democratic Republic of Congo. After that, many other countries followed the trend leading to creation of large and breath taking National parks and reserves. (photo for illustration purpose)

Below is a list analysing the largest game parks and reserves in Africa.

1. Selous Game Reserve

It is found in Tanzania, hence it is the largest in Africa with area of approximately 55,000.SqKm. The reserve has 40,000 hippos, 120,000-150,000 buffalo, 100,000 wild beasts and 35,000 zebras. Others include lions, leopards, hyenas and crocodiles.

2. Central Kalahari Game Reserve

It is situated central Botswana and it is a part of Kalahari basin, the continuous stretch of sand from Orange river to Zaire. The Game Reserves is approximately 52,000 SqKm in area.(photo for illustration purpose)

3. Namib-Naukluft National Park

It is found in western Namibia situated between the coast of the Atlantic ocean and the egde of great Escarpment. It covers an area of 49,768 SqKm. The most activities include hiking, nature walk, bird watching, guided nature drive etc.

4. Niassa Game Reserve

Niassa Game Reserve is the largest conservation in Mozambique and fourth largest in Africa. It borders Nyerere National park in Tanzania without fences so animals move freely between the combined area.

5. Kafue National park

Kafue National park is found in western part of is the largest and most popular in Zambia. It is known for its diversity, grasslands, forest and floodplains. Kafue is approximately 22,000 SqKm.
