Is genge tone really dead?

In the early up to mid 2000s, there existed a music genre known as 'genge'. It was a type of Kenyan hip hop music. Artists such as Jimw@t, Jua Cali and Nonini were among those who perfected the genre. This music ruled the airwaves and it was not strange to hear someone singing along to "under18" by [email protected] or "Bidii Yangu"by Jua Cali in a matatu.

In 2017, a new genre of music known as "Gengetone" evolved. By 2019 the genre became popular among Kenyans countrywide. Gengetone can be translated as "music meant for the masses" and indeed it became music meant for the masses due to its popularity. The music was brought into the limelight by a group of youths known as Ethics through their song known as "Lamba Lolo" which is among the earliest in this genre. Since then others such as Zzero Sufuri joined with his infamous song "Zimenishika". Other artists in this genre include Mbogi Genje, Sailors gang, Ssaru, and Ochunglo Family among others.

Sadly in the recent years, the once famed Kenyan music has faced a gradual decline in airplay. Critics especially in the social media has termed it "moto ya Karatasi" or "paper fire" which burst brightly but only for a limited time. I dont feel as if gengetone has become gengegone. I feel as if Kenyans have had much of it and have decided to switch to another content. They have had much of lyrics containing weed and sexual content which is highly evident in the songs. Gengetone has not died nor declined new songs such as 'Lawama II' by Reckless and 'Diva wa Insta" by Gwaash have been released but they dont have the popularity these songs had in the initial years.

We should back these artists since they have placed us on the world's map. We now have a music we can call our own. International artists such as Konshens have really praised the genre and I dont see why we should let it go down the drain. We should not let the bird we have at hand escape just because we have spotted two in the Bush.
