Patrick Maina popularly known as Maish Mkenya is a Deejay, award-winning radio presenter Entertainer, and a budding music producer hailing from the Mt.Kenya region. He is currently one of the residents' Deejay at the number 1 entertainment joint in Nanyuki Town, The Moran Lounge and Grill. I sat down with this talented young man and had a candid conversation about music, the entertainment industry, and plans.
Check Out how our conversation went:-
Why did you decide to use Maish Mkenya as your Stage Name?
It’s crazy man! It goes way back in 2011 I used to be in a football team and we were too many Mainas so guys had to try and find names to differentiate us and someone just called Maish Mkenya and the day I started working on the radio I went with that one and it stuck to date.
How did you get into the Deejay and entertainment industry?
I did mass communication at the college level and on my attachment, I went to a radio station and got lucky to get a chance to have a solo show for a good 3 months. I was looking for ways to spice up the show without using an extra person and I thought if I learned how to DJ it would put me in a good position in the future, so I went to a DJ academy and learned how to Dj. I came back to radio and realized what I learned at the Dj academy was not enough to place me out here as a complete DJ I had to look for a club learn how to play at the club level and I eventually fell in love with performing at clubs and I have been doing it to date.
How has the journey been so far?
Not easy at all but I have to do what I have to do to get going and elevating
Which DJ has been your greatest motivation and why?
I have a couple of those but on top of the list have to be Creme De La Crème.
He is different, incomparable the way he plays music is different you can see the passion in him every time he plays you can tell he wants to play music and give guys a good time.
Which 5 Kenyan Djs would you prefer to do an opening set for you on your biggest Friday night show?
1. Creme De la Creme
2. Dj Joe Mfalme

5. Dj Silky
What is your favorite Dj setup?
Any CDJ and a Rane mixer I’m good to go.
Do you prefer to work alongside a hypeman or do you prefer to hype your own set?
I prefer hyping my set I like to be in control, sometimes it is difficult to be in sync with an MC.
When all the party is over how do you like to chill out?
Right now it has to be at the studio; I'm making music and it's fun and interesting I’m spending most of my time in there. Guys should expect a lot of fresh music from me.
Do You Think Kenyan Music is good enough to compete with Bongo flava, Naija, or the current wave of Amapiano?
Kenyan music is super good in terms of quality and all that the only problem that comes in is quantity if you look at the number of tracks our superstars release and compare to the Naija brothers you'll notice the difference in numbers plus we don't give space to the young artist as much as should, for example, gengetone dominated because first, it is our sound second they we re releasing songs back to back and that’s what we need to get back to where we were in terms of dominating East African music
Which Kenyan Artist do you feel is underrated and people should pay more attention to?
1. Bryan Black
What is your next move in the entertainment industry?
They are many and I don’t wanna jinx but production is the first one. I wanna put out plenty go good music and also introduce fresh artist to the music industry
If you had a chance to work with any African artists who top 6 artists would you work with?
Sheebah Karungi from UG is on top of that list she’s super talented I love her with my everything then there is Khaligraph jones, Naiboi, Trio Mio, wizkid, and Nadia Mukami.
If Given One Chance to throw your dream event, which location will you choose and why?
Nairobi for sure guys are always ready to turn up.
Any Interesting Projects we should expect from Mt Kenya Number 1?
I’m changing this Mt Kenya Number 1 tag to The Baddest Man In Africa I have done almost everything in that region it’s time to move out and go big and to answer your question I have a lot of projects that will be dropping late this year and early next year the first project I’ll be featuring Freezer, Yfiti, and Odi wa muranga.
