A former Switch TV Swahili news anchor has been forced into a new job as matatu all to make ends meet, following mass layoffs at the Red Cross-owned station in December 2021.
Ex-presenter Robert Ouma took to social media on Thursday to chronicle his experience as a matatu tout so far, much to the surprise of his fans.
In a video doing rounds on Instagram, the former media personality is seen looking dapper as he completes his daily rounds in a matatu plying the Rongai-Nairobi road.
“Tunafunga funga kazi hapa, ni saa mbili na dakika ishirini na tisa. Ofisi ni jina tu lakini pesa ni tamu tu. Kesho pia ni siku majaliwa,” Ouma said in an Instagram Story captioned “the cleanest dondaa in 254."
While insisting he was comfortable with his current job, Ouma urged Kenyans not to overlook blue-collar job opportunities as long as they put food on their table.
“Mtu afanye anachoweza kufanya maanake ndivyo hali ilivyo,” Ouma said.
In December 2021, Switch TV Chairman Sahil Shah announced that the media house would shift from broadcast to on-air to focus on a more digital strategy and approach starting in 2022 due to changing trends in the market.
"In line with our fundamental philosophy of listening to the needs of young people and with the ambition to become the reference media platform for the emerging generation, Switch Media has made the conscious decision to build a new strategy around the digital-first," Shah said then.
Shah also announced that the TV channel would unveil a new product and service offerings in line with its digital approach to meeting consumer needs.
Other notable figures sacked in the restructuring exercise include Fred Muitiriri, Nana Owiti and Tony Kwalanda among others.
