Socialite Vera Sidika decided to transfer her salon business from Nairobi to Mombasa. She even rebranded and changed the name from ‘Vera Sidika Beauty Parlour’ to ‘VS Spa’. During her recent interview on Bonga na Jalas, she told Jalango that she decided to do that because Mombasa is her home and also to take care of many of her clients that used travel all the way from Mombasa just to access the services.
Vera had to move with some of the finest service providers to Mombasa even though she employed some more from County 001. She started her salon business way before Betty Kyallo but she struggled a little bit in late 2018. When she broke up with Otile Brown, the singer spilled the beans that the voluptuous socialite’s beauty parlour business was really struggling. She even admitted it in some leaked WhatsApp messages.
After rebranding, one cannot help but note some striking similarities between VS Spa and Betty Kyallo’s ‘Flair By Betty’. Apart from both of them offering hair, beauty, spa, and barber services, they also have some very unique features. Since Vera started her business earlier than Betty, we may say Betty might have borrowed some ideas, which is normal in business.
Firstly, both salons have a special room for Muslim women. They argue that Muslim women require some extra privacy since to them it is a taboo for men to see their hair. Vera Sidika’s VS Spa will have a more client base now that she is in Mombasa where there is a very high population of Muslims.
Secondly, both of them have a designated section for kids. They have gone ahead to decorate the rooms to be children-friendly. They both have paintings of popular cartoons that young kids will identify with. The similarity on why they did that is very similar and it cannot be a coincidence.
Thirdly, the two businesses are situated in beautiful and humongous standalone properties. They also provide some extra services like selling drinks including alcohol for clients waiting to be served.
In a nutshell, there seems to be no service offered by Flair By Betty that is not available in VS Spa, except maybe, that VS Spa also sells some high-end hair products and ‘Veetox’. It looks like the two shared ideas or what do you think?
