Rap stars in jail is not a new concept in the Hip-hop community throughout music history. Most of the rappers are usually incarcerated on drug charges a few have committed much more serious crimes such as violent robbery and assault.

Listed below are some of the most famous Hip-hop artists who have been convicted of various crimes.

1. XXXTentacion

The controversial emo-rap icon was arrested on numerous occasions over the entire course of his short-lived career. He was first detained as a teenager and sent to a juvenile detention center for illegal possession of a gun as well as robbery and assault with a deadly weapon.

In 2016 (his infamous breakout year) he was arrested again and charged with false imprisonment and a physical assault after allegedly hitting his girlfriend and locking her in his apartment for five months to hide her injuries. He was released in March 2017 under house arrest but was booked later on for witness tampering and aggravated battery of a pregnant woman.

The 'Sad' rapper was unfortunately shot dead on June 18, 2022, during a robbery at his hometown Florida a few months after his release.

2. Nicki Minaj

According to reports, the self-proclaimed 'Queen of Rap' was also arrested back in 2003 and charged with criminal possession of a gun with intent to use.

She, however, revealed that she shot a fellow teenage girl who spent days in hospital recovering through a now-deleted Instagram post in May 2018. The New-York bred rapper also mentioned that she fled to her aunt's residence in South America after learning that she was about to be deported.

3. Tekashi69

Controversial American rapper 6ix9ine born Daniel Hernandez was also arrested on firearms and racketeering charges in November 2018.

He was arraigned in court in September 2019 and sentenced to 2 years in prison after testifying against his former gang "Nine Trey".

4. Lil Wayne

In 2009, legendary rapper Lil Wayne, born Dwayne Michael Carter Jr., pleaded guilty to attempted possession of a weapon in connection with a gun that was found on his tour bus in Manhattan.



The 39-year-old served eight months of his one-year sentence at a Rikers Island jail.
