Former Cabinet Secretary Hassan Wario was on Thursday, September 16, sentenced to 6 years behind the bars with an option of paying a fine of Sh3.6million after he was found guilty of embezzlement of public funds.
Citizen TV presenter Waihiga Mwaura played a bigger role in exposing the Rio 2016 Olympics Games scandal that has now resulted in the conviction of the ex-CS. Waihiga's pivotal role was in a piece titled 'Fiasco in Rio’ that got aired on August 28, 2016, on Citizen TV Prime Time News.
In the investigative piece, Waihiga exposed how National Olympics Committee-Kenya (NOCK) officials used taxpayers money to ferry joyriders to Brazil. He also unearthed how he was in the list of those whose air ticket was catered for yet all his bills were under Royal Media Services (RMS).
The expose became a national scandal that prompted the formation of the Rio-de-Janeiro 2016 Olympic Games Probe Committee by the Ministry of Sports, Culture and the Arts and was gazetted under Notice Number 7176.
“I learnt of the list that had the Kenyan contingency to Rio. The list had featured my name. I wish to state that I carried a story on this on Citizen TV upon arrival from Rio. The story was dubbed ‘Rio Fiasco',” Mwaura stated when he was summoned by the committee to shed light on what transpired.
He further added that while in Rio covering the games with his colleagues, his accommodation and air tickets were covered by his employer. He noted that he didn't receive any facilitation from NOCK or government agencies during and after the Olympic Games.
In her ruling, Magistrate Elizabeth Juma found Wario and his accomplice Stephen Soi guilty of the charges and jailed for 6 years or a pay a fine of Sh3.6million. Soi was sent behind the bars to serve 10 years jail term or pay a fine of Sh103million.
