Mama Kayai is among one oldest clique of actors from way back in the 1980s when Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC) was the only TV broadcaster. She was majorly known for her role in Vitimbi where she played as Mzee Ojwang's (Benson Wanjau) wife. The played the role so well that many people thought she was the actual wife of Mzee Ojwang but this was not the case as they had their respective families.
Mary Khavere known to her fans as Mama Kayai is a talented actress who pioneered acting in the early 1990s when there was little to nothing known about it. She has been in the industry for about four decades treating us to laughter for the longest time. She started her journey in the creative sector as a traditional dancer and singer with a group, known as The Black Golden Stars which was based in Majengo, Pumwani in Nairobi county.[Photo courtesy]
She later went for auditions for TV films and this is where she met Mzee Ojwang and Lucy Wangui (who was the judge in Vioja Mahakamani). Her acting career kickstarted in the 1980s in a film called Darubini before appearing on Vitimbi and Vioja Mahakamani.[Photo courtesy]
