Schools Should Remain Closed Until Mid June 2022[Opinion]

It has been more than one month since the closure of schools following president Uhuru Kenyatta directives, to close all learning institutions to curb the spread of Coronavirus.

Today the head of state lifted cessation of movement in and out of the five Counties that were previously under lockdown following the increase of positivity rate. Speaking at State House during Labour day celebration he said schools should reopen as earlier planned adding infections rate has decreased.

However it is my opinion that all learning institutions should remain closed until mid June next year year following the consistent change in positivity rate. For instance for things to go back to normal, Ministry of Health Should recorded 5 per cent positivity rate for two consecutive weeks and as we all know that has not been achieved.

Secondly not all schools in Kenya has enough classroom that can accommodate all learners as per ministry of health one metre rule and social distancing. Learners in grade 1 and 2 are difficult to control during games time as they normally intermingle with one another.

The government should wait for sometime as they monitor Covid-19 situation in Kenya rather than making rush decision to open schools and later close again should positivity rate increase. This will also inconvenience school calendar and delay in 2021 national examination.
