The Teachers Service Commission is a government body which deals with the welfare of teachers. It's roles include recruitment of teachers, promotion of teachers , continuously training those teachers already in service and dismissal of teachers.
In matters of training and developing of teachers, the Teachers Service Commission puts in place programmes in which trained teachers are supposed to undergo through. In 2016, the Teachers Service Commission introduced Teachers Performance and Appraisal (TPAD) . Through the TPAD, heads of institutions appraise teachers and send the results to TSC. Though it was opposed by the teachers unions, TPAD has brought quality education in the country.
The Teachers Service Commission has again introduced another programme known as Professional Development Training. TSC boss Dr. Nancy Macharia says that this is a programme which will will focus on updating teachers knowledge, skills and values in the society. She says that the aim of this modules is to make teaching professional just like other fields e.g medicine, engineering and law.
Macharia says that the programme will kick off in December 2021 and that teachers can register for the same in the following institutions, Kenyatta University, Mount Kenya University, Riara University and Kenya Education Management Institution. That teachers will have to renew their teaching certificates after every five years following the introduction of this programme.
