Parade protest

Kipsigis Girls High School Closed Indefinitely, Some Casualties Reported

Kipsigis Girls High in Kericho County was on Sunday closed indefinitely following student unrest. The girls took to the streets to protest the transfer of their principal. The Kericho County Education Officer, Rose Sagara announced the closure of the national school. Rose said that the school is closed and she will inform the students when they will report back. The closure followed an incident where students stormed out of the school at dawn and walked three kilometres to protest the transfer of their long-serving principal, Juliana Kirui.

Mrs Kirui swapped places with her Moi Girls High School Eldoret counterpart Mrs Christine Chumba. The students’ representative who requested not to be named said they were disappointed that Mrs Kirui had been transferred and replaced with Mrs Chumba. She said that their principal had managed the school very well and they did not know the reason for her transfer.

Some girls got minor injuries during the protests and other girls and members of the staff escorted them home.
