Why Competency Based Curriculum (CBC) Is The Best System Of Education In Kenya(Opinion)

Before Kenya got her independence, the education system was divided by racial lines. There were three different education systems; African education system, Asian education and European education.

Each was structured based on the colonial ideology of the levels of intelligence each race was believed to have. After the December 12th 1963 the 7-4-2-3 education system was adopted. Learners took 7 years in primary, 4 years in lower secondary, 2 years in upper secondary and 3 years in university.

Later in the year 1985 the 8-4-4 system was implement. In this system learners took 8 years in primary school, 4 years in secondary school and another 4 years in university.

In the two education systems that is 7-4-2-3 and 8-4-4, the learners were given book work knowledge that if you don't proceed with your education then the little you gained will be meaningless to you. Learners didn't have the outside classroom skills. In these systems the leaning was teacher centered method and only qualified learners would proceed with their education and get employed.

In the year 2017 the Competency Based Curriculum (CBC) was researched and developed by the KICD (Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development).

The new system of 2-6-3-3-3 has 2years in pre- primary school, 6 years primary school, 3years junior secondary , 3 years senior secondary and 3 years in university.

The change was to emphasis on the transition of chalk-and-talk teaching to focusing on the learner centered teaching, by learning the skills which may be needed in outside classroom. This is will ensure that that all learners are catered for in the outside world. Both the genius and the slow learners will have something to do as this system help in naturing learners talents. This system will help in reducing the rate of unemployment in Kenya. The skills got from school will enable them employ themselves based on their areas of specialisation .
