New Year Shocker For Parents As Government Bans Boarding Schools

The government plans to abolish boarding schools from grade 1 to grade 9 come January 2023. Announcing the news permanent secretary for education Belio Kipsang said that the learners need to be near their parents.

This comes as a shocker for parents who have children who are already enrolled in boarding schools. However, the move was praised by head teachers who claim that parents should take responsibility of taking care of their children.

Belio Kipsang further explained that the reason why the government wants to abolish boarding schools is to make education more affordable. The shift is one of the reforms presented to president William Ruto by the education task force.

President William Ruto announced that junior secondary will be domiciled in existing primary school and the government prefers day schooling for junior secondary. Private schools seeking to register boarding junior secondary will not be allowed. The shift is set to take into effect when schools reopen next year.
