Prof Mugenda Turned Down Sh100 Million Offer Upon Her Retirement as The KU VC in 2016, Here's Why

The former Kenyatta University (KU) Vice Chancellor (VC) Prof. Olive Mwihaki Mugenda declined a hefty sendoff package upon her retirement as the VC in 2016.

According to report via The Standard, the University council had came into the idea as a form of gratitude and recognition of her exemplary development of the University after serving for a decade.

The hefty goodbye package proposed by the council is however said to have received opposition from the members of the public expressing their agitation from the council's move.

However, Mugenda turned down the offer, a move which was seen as a definition of a true leader. The then Communication Director in the institution Mr. Koinange confirmed the decline which was delivered by the Ex - VC in form of a letter.

In her response, Mugenda declined the offer claiming that there is no need to get paid for doing her work. She claimed that she was diligently serving her mandate and that's what was expected of her.

“She had said she didn’t see the need of such a package since she was doing her job as a public servant who expected no special treatment upon her retirement,” Mr Koinange said.

Mugenda is currently serving as the chairperson in the Judiciary Service Committee (JSC) in the ongoing Chief Justice recruitment.

However, some people have petitioned the procedure questioning why she is chairing the committee despite having no legal experience.
