A glimpse to the medical engineering world

In Kenya and all across the globe Medical and Engineering related course are highly regarded and at one point in life almost every child has a dream of being a Medical practitioner or an Engineer. After completing the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education most of the top students opt for either of the two but a percentage is stuck between choosing between Engineering and Medicine .If you are in this group worry no more as i will introduce you to Medical Engineering. A question arises what is Medical engineering?

Medical engineering/Biomedical engineering is the application of engineering principles and design concepts to medicine and biology for healthcare purposes. Basically Medical engineers combine the design and problem solving skills of engineering with biological sciences to advance health care treatment. Medical engineers work not only at the hospital but also at manufacturing companies, educational and medical research facilities and government regulatory agencies.

Medical engineering is offered in various institutions in Kenya at certificate, diploma and bachelors degree level such as; Technical University Of Mombasa (TUM), Kenyatta university (KU) at the degree level. At diploma level , medical engineering is offered in very many colleges and universities some being Mount Kenya University, Technical University Of Mombasa, KMTC campuses, Eldoret Technical Training Institute, Thika training institute among others.

Employment of medical engineers is projected to grow at 6 percent toward the year 2030 globally making it one of the fastest growing profession.
