University students Suffer A big Blow as HELB Loan Reduced.

Higher Education Loan Board is the body responsible for giving students loan to facilitate their education. The loan is nowadays given to both University students and TVETs students.

When the CEO Mr Ringera was speaking last month during the handing over ceremony of the Elimu Afya Fund by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). He started and I quote “We hope to fund about 450,000 students both in TVET and Universities at a total cost of about Sh12.8 billion. That means about 95,000 students will go unfunded this year."

The CEO confirmed that students who will benefit from the loan facility will get an average of Sh38,000, down from Sh45,000.TVETs students will still get their average ksh40,000 though the number which will benefit from the said amount is reduced from the previous figure.

Mr Ringera blamed budgetary cuts and non-performing loans as the main contributing factors to reduced loans.
