10 Most Performing Technical Institutes In Kenya

In Kenya there are 100s of technical institutes but among these we have institutes with high quality services in terms of equipments, level of training and quality of trainers.

1) Nairobi Technical Training Institute

Nairobi Technical Training Institute began in 1951 as a Modern High School for the Asian Community. At first the focus of the college’s curriculum included,Mechanical Engineering, Carpentry and Joinery.

However the college system has changed over time to be among the most advanced training colleges in the country. It offers various courses in several fields which including, Engineering, Health and Applied Sciences, Business Studies,Management,Information and Communication Technology, Guidance and Counseling and Liberal Studies.

2) Kenya Coast National Polytechnic

Initially refered to as Mombasa Technical Training Institute,it is the best technical college in the coastal area of Kenya. Found in Mombasa, Kenya coast national polytechnic from 1950 was a Technical High School and later advanced to a middle-level technical college in 1984 to give technical training and access the technical demands of both public and private areas of the economical system.

The National Polytechnic provides courses which include certificates in crafts, diploma and trade studies, its syllabus has been passed and confirmed by both KASNEB and Kenyan National Examination council (KNEC) The college has improved in terms of experienced tutors and training facility and as a result this has improved the college production of highly trained and technically-skilled graduates.

3) Thika technical institute

The institute began as a vocational training center in 1949 for ex-WW2 servicemen but later it was converted to a technical high school, The Technical Training Institute has elevated to be among the most ranked technical colleges in Kenya. It is located within Thika town but near Thika Level 5 District Hospital,the institute covers 45-acre piece of land.

Thika technical training institute provides different training courses under Various profession's which includes information communication technology, library studies, Engineering and Applied Science among others.

4) Kabete National Polytechnic

Kabete is one of the oldest technical college in Kenya it started as a Depot Training industry in 1924 during the colonial times before it became a technical training institute in 1985 providing Diploma programs, Certificate,Artisan and Trade Test.

It was initially known as Kabete Technical Training Institute but currently known as Kabete National Polytechnic.

Kabete National Polytechnic as per now offers 36 diploma courses, 15 certificate programs and six artisan courses.The college has been approved by different bodies that including Pharmacy and Poisons Board,TVET, KNEC, NITA, KASNEB and Kenyan Medical Technicians and Technologists Board


5) Meru National polytechnic

Initial the national polytechnic was known as Meru Technical Training Institute but the name changed in 2016 when it was transformed to a national polytechnic, the college started in 1956, it is located along Meru- Nanyuki highway in Meru, 10km away from Meru town.

The College provides courses which include Applied Science Business Studies, Engineering and Agriculture,The college currently provides 3 higher diploma courses, 6 artisan programs, 31 craft programs and 25 diploma courses.


6) Eldoret Technical Training Institute

Despite the fact that the institute was established in 2009 with the intention of providing quality training to trainees, it has quickly grown to become among the top colleges in Kenya.

Eldoret poly is a private tertiary institute that had received accreditation status from the Higher Education Ministry, Science and Technology in 2011.

The College offers courses in field which include Social Science, information technology and computer studies, Engineering and Art among others. It has branches in Bomet and Lodwar


7) The Kenya Technical Trainers College


The college was established in 1978 where it was officially opened by Daniel Arap Moi on March 16th 1979,the college is among the leading government institutions with the main objective of training skilled personnel who either work as tutors in other technical colleges or in different parts of the economy that need technically-skilled individuals. Kenya Technical Trainers college was founded based on the partnership between Kenya and Canada, initially the college began with a teaching staff that consisted of Canadians, however changes were made between 1978 and 1993 where trained Kenyans from Canadian university took over as the stuff of the college.

Currently the college is among the best technical colleges in Kenya.


8) Kiambu institute of Science and Technology

The Kiambu institute is well recognized by Ministry of higher education,Science and Technology and TVET for providing certificate and diploma levels. It was established in 1973 so as to offer programs such as plumbing,secretarial, masonry and carpentry.

Kiambu institute of science and technology is among the best performing institutes in Kenya in terms service provision.

9) Machakos Institute of Technology

The college has different faculties which include school of Social work and community Development School of computing and information Technology,school of Accounts and Finance,school of hairdressing,and Beauty therapy, School of Hospitality Management, school of Engineering school of accounting and finance among others.

The institute is located in Machakos County (Machakos-Mombasa Junction). Machakos institute provides high quality training producing highly competitive trainees in their respective fields.

10) Embu Technical Training Institute


Embu Technical Training Institute is located in Embu just outside Embu town, it is one of the leading technical colleges not only in Embu but also in the country as per now. Embu college offers a number of courses that include technical and business courses, the College offers courses at certificate and diploma levels among others.
