Lamu Governor Fahim Twaha has paid full year school fees for a needy Bungoma girl whose story rocked news headlines yesterday. Diana Nyokabi can now heave a sigh of relief after the Coastal county head cleared her school fees on Thursday morning. Diana scored 402 marks in KCPE and expected to join Moi Girls High School in Eldoret.
Her dreams were however cut short due to lack of fees and the distraught girl resorted to repeating class 8. Fahim Twaha’s hand of compassion comes in the wake of piling pressure on Bungoma governor Wycliffe Wangamati, whose administration is accused of striking Nyokabi’s name out of its scholarship programme due to her ethnic background.
Nyokabi revealed that she had earlier been shortlised as a beneficiary in the Wangamati county scholarship programme. Her name was later mysteriously missing from the list under unclear circumstances. Netizens accused Wangamati’s administration of ethnically profiling the girl given that she was not a native of the county.
Leading blogger, Gordon Opiyo, who works for the Bungoma county governor, claimed that Nyokabi’s mum, Judy Nyanchera, was an alleged woman of means and that she could comfortably pay her daughter’s school fees. He cited this as the reason of ejecting Nyokabi’s name from the list of the scholarship beneficiaries.
