Universities continue to produce thousands of graduates year in year out. Some of the giant universities in the country do conduct more than one graduation within a year.Today, Kenyatta University is conducting another virtual graduation. The graduands are optimist to get jobs which have proved to be hard to come by especially during this time of Covid-19 pandemic in the country.
Getting jobs has been another uphill task for the graduates who have flocked the job market. The number of jobs advertised are not commensurate to the number of applicants. For instance, just last year,300,000 teachers applied for only 11,000 vacancies at TSC.Recently,JSC too received over 60,000 applicants for just a few vacancies advertised.
It is a now a blow to Public universities whose graduates will fail to secure jobs within a year of graduation. The government has said that they will have reduced fundings.Part of this punishment is to tame the universities against courses that are not marketable. These courses have been seen as wasting the graduates. With the huge number of graduates who are yet to get jobs, this may be a toll order.
