High School Teacher Who Natured Mps, Professors And Judges Speaks.

Mzee samwel maneno

As Kenya was celebrating her heroes and heroines in a special mashujaa day event held at Wanguru stadium in Kirinyaga county, one individual was among those who were feted by the president.

Mzee Samwel maneno who is now 82 years old is a shujaa worth mentioning and the day could not end without him being honoured for his Immense Contributions.

Whereas teachers have very little to celebrate given their poor pay and poor terms of service, they normally take pride in the work of their hands.

Teachers rejoice when they see the minds they helped shape play critical roles in society while pushing the development agenda.

Mzee matano is such a teacher who takes pride in producing top jurists, professors and even a sitting MP.

Maneno hails from Matuga subcounty and was yesterday honoured for his outstanding service to the country.

He served as a teacher for 58 Years, 27 of which he spent as a principal of several national schools.

He retired in 1996 while teaching in Lenana school having joined the teaching profession before independence in 1962.

Other schools he taught before joining Lenana include Aldima Visram and shimo la tewa in Mombasa, kenyatta high school in Taita Taveta and alliance high school in Nairobi.

Currently he owns kwale Tumaini academy Golini where he teaches social studies

“All my life has been in school teaching. You cannot take me out of class. I also refused many government appointments that would require me to be in office perusing files and opted to continue being in class,” he said as quite by Citizen digital.

Some of the influential personslities he has taught include ICT cabinet secretary Joe mucheru whom he taught at Lenana school.

Others include Thraka Nithi Senator professor kithure kindiki, professor James Ole kiyapi, Justices partrick kiage and Isaac lenaola, Mvita MP Abdulswamad Nassir and activist Maina kiai.

“It gives me pride that I have taught so many people who are serving the public in various positions,” he says In 1981, Maneno was among the members of the MACKAY task-force which introduced the 8-4-4 system in the education sector.

Mzee maneno is a good inspiration to a majority of teachers who are currently facing a myriad of challenges ranging from what they term as a high handed employer and poor terms of service.

That the reward of a teacher is a society full of people whose minds have been sharpened to help in making the world a better place than they found it.
