A teacher in a public school in Vihiga County was on Wednesday night killed by unknown people.
Silas Owuor, a Business Studies' teacher at Mbale Boys, was heading to his rented house when he accosted by the assailants and killed.
The attackers robbed him and then beat him to death with a hammer.
A passerby became suspicious when he spotted the teacher lying unconscious on the roadside, prompting him to raise alarm, drawing the attention of residents.
As news of the grisly killing spread, scores of residents rushed to the scene and were baffled to see their badly injured teacher.
People who had gathered at the scene administered first aid to him before they rushed him to hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
Preliminary police findings show that the deceased was attacked after withdrawing money from MPesa.
According to the school's principal Peter Omutiti, the slain teacher had received money from several parents to dispense to students as bus fare to proceed to their homes for the mid-term break.
Mr Omutiti condemned the killing and called on the police to get to the bottom of the matter.
