In Kenya, there are over three hundred thousand teachers serving in both primary and secondary schools.
Greater percentage of these teachers are serving in public schools while some few are serving in private schools.
Teachers teaching in private schools are being taken care of by either individuals or organizations who own those schools while teachers teaching in public schools are being taken care of by the government through Teachers Service Commission (TSC).
Teachers Service Commission (TSC) is an independent body that is mandated by Kenyan constitution to employe, transfer, discipline, pay and promote qualified teachers to the next level. The commission is currently under the leadership of Dr Nancy Macharia who is the CEO.
Teachers through their unions KUPPET and KNUT were heard crying of the poor services they had been getting from the hospitals using this medical scheme AON. As a result, they had been pushing their employer TSC to scrap off AON.
Some few days back, a group of twelve teachers were reported to have gone to court to sue both TSC and AON for allegedly denying them access to quality medical services.
In what is now seen as a huge win for the TSC teachers nation wide, the High Court have now ordered AON Minet cover to ensure that teachers get quality medical services in Kenyan hospitals.
The court also warned the TSC against taking any disciplinary action for those teachers who filed the petition.
