There was a backlash from teachers after Teacher Service Commission (TSC) announced a mandatory refresher training course for all tutors that will take five years. They were also required to pay Sh6,000 each year for the next five years.
However, it is a big blow to teachers as the petition that was brought before the High Court to stop the move by the TSC, was declined. Justice David Nderitu of the Employment and Labour Court declined to stop the rollout.
This means that four universities that were proposed to offer professional courses are free to admit teachers as their students. They include Kenyatta, Riara, Mount Kenya universities and the Kenya Education Management Institute.
Mr Karanja was seeking to halt the programme claiming that tutors and other stakeholders in the sector were not consulted in the development and the contents of the module.
