A Professor is the latest scholar to join a number of Kenyans daring abroad with the prestigious Washington University now a home for Kariuki Njenga who will be leading crucial researches at the coveted institution.
The virologist who has an interest in the African continent, Njenga also specializes in Zoonotic diseases which helps the World stay alert in combating any emerging pandemics and divides his time working with Ph.D. students at the University of Nairobi and Kemri.
At Kemri, he is part of the team that focuses on addressing critical public health issues affecting Kenyans but he also leads a research team in Africa and was the lead professor that recruited a team of scientists in East and Central Africa and applied to set up and run centers for Research in Emerging Infectious Diseases.
"My goal is to make WSU Global Health — Kenya, which represents the institution’s public-health mission in Kenya, the go-to place for cutting-edge research in emerging infectious diseases on the continent," the professor stated.
The scholar boasts of a Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine and Master of Science degrees from the University of Nairobi while he also possesses a Ph.D. from the Pennsylvania University and in 2019, Kariuki was inducted into the World's most elite science body, the National Academy of Sciences in the United States.
In 2020, Kariuki was among eleven other people who secured funds from the United States of America National Institute of Health that were announced by American physician-scientist and immunologist serving as the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.
Between 2004 to 2014, he worked with US centers for Disease Control and Prevention as the head of labs but returned to Kenya briefly where he played a vital role in studying diseases such as the Rift Valley fever, Swine Flu and Ebola.
