From Kisumu Governor Anyang Nyong'o to Makueni's Kivutha Kibwana to Kericho county chief Paul Chepkwony, the Kenyan county leadership is made up of some of the most serious academics.

So far, there are four professors who are Governors in Kenya. They include: Prof Nyong'o, Prof Kibwana, Prof. John Lonyangapuo of West Pokot and Prof Chepkwony.

But Bomet County Governor Hillary Barchok is not left behind. He is one those who made names for themselves in the world of academics before trying their luck in politics.

Before the 2017 general election, Dr Barchok was a lecturer at Chuka University where he had risen through the ranks to a position of a Dean in the School of Education.

The then Sotik MP Joyce Laboso came calling and plucked Dr Barchok from the university into the murky world of politics.

With Dr Laboso running for Bomet Governor seat against incumbent Isaac Ruto, she picked Dr Barchok as her running mate. The pair went on to win the 2017 general election.

Now serving as Bomet Governor following the death of Dr Laboso in 2019, Dr Barchok is eyeing a second term in office come the 2022 general election.

Professionally, Dr Barchok is a teacher. He holds a Bachelor of Education degree from Egerton University and a Masters degree in Curriculum Development from the same institution.

For his PhD, he joined Moi University before embarking on a career in the world of academics.

Before joining Chuka University as a lecturer, Dr Barchok taught Chemistry and Mathematics in various secondary schools.
