Uproar as a Private School Owner Allegedly Charges Each Pupil Sh6,000 Toilet Construction fee

A private school in Bungoma county is under close scrutiny by ministry of education officials for overcharging parents.

Christ the King Primary School in Bungoma town has ordered every child to pay Sh6,000 to enable construction of modern toilets and Cabros on the school compound.

The school owned by Fr.Christopher Wanyonyi, the presiding priest of Christ the King Catholic Church says that it is a directive from the public health officers.

Parents are now up in arms and are likely to remove their children and admit them in other schools if the matter is not handled carefully.

Victor Nyongesa a parent with four children claims that development fee was scrapped and included in the general fee.

"How can the school management decided to overcharge us yet they never included it in the general fee structure?," he asked.

Nyongesa continued, "It is unfortunate that they are charging each child not a parent, what about a parent like me with four children, am I supposed to cough out Sh24,000? this is wrong during this economic times,".

The letter reads, "I have never asked you to contribute development money and I have always constructed this school from scratch through the fundraising from United States of America,".

The public health officers has ordered us to construct toilets and put cabros among the buildings to meet the standards, am therefore requesting each child to pay Sh6,000 to help us to meet it.

"I am therefore charging one time development fee to enable us meet this development initiative, I am calling on you to pay Sh6,000 to enable us meet the initiative," said Fr.Wanyonyi.

Parents have complained of private schools across the country overcharging parents.

They are now calling on ministry of education officials to investigate them to help parents survive during this tough economic times.
