Instead of going home however, the three reportedly diverted towards Matinga Dam for a quick swim.
The incident was confirmed by the area assistant chief Mr Winslaus Ochara.
"I questioned the boy's friends who told me they decided to come here for a swim before going back to school," Rumbiye Assistant Chief Winslaus Ochara said.
Efforts to search for the deceased were delayed by lack of divers in the area. Hours later they retrieved the body and transferred it to Nangina Mission Hospital mortuary.
Mr. Ochara has cautioned residents against swimming without protective gear.
"It was very difficult to access divers. So it is very dangerous for residents to swim here," he added.
