Coronavirus is ravaging the country causing havoc in all sectors of economy. The virus has devastated families and communities. Families are suffering due to loss of their loved ones and also loss of livelihood. People have lost their jobs due to closure of economy and businesses.
Education sector is once again hit by the virus following president Uhuru Kenyatta directive to suspend in-person learning in all learning institutions including universities, tertiary learning Institutions and colleges. Dreams and aspirations of more than 10 million learners are once again turned upside down.
There fate of going back to school now hang in balance following today's Covid-19 updates. In today's update 1,153 persons have tested positive to Covid-19, from a sample size of 9,316 tested in the last 24 hrs bringing the total number of confirmed cases in the country to 156,318. Cumulative tests so far conducted are 1,641,015. The positivity rate stood at 12.4%.
In today's update positivity rate is 12.4% up from 11% that was registered yesterday. This has put school re-opening in jeopardize. For schools to reopen, Covid-19 positivity rate should be below 5% for a period of two week. As it stands now things are getting worse and Covid-19 curve will not flatten soon. This means learners will have to stay for long period at home. This will once again expose them to serious of challenges such as teenage pregnancies, child labour among other changes.
