Unknown Details of Kenya's Most Interesting First Lady

Lucy Muthoni Kibaki was famous for trimming down on her composure while dealing with those who crossed her line.

Famous footage captured her slapping a cameraman who was filming her. She proceeded to ask the man, 'who is your mother?' A phrase that would, later on, be famous.

Below are some of the things you should know about the late first lady, who was a wife, a mother, and a grandmother.

1.Pastor's daughter

Born January 13, 1936, Lucy Kibaki is the daughter to Reverend John Kagai of the PCEA. Aside from being a man of the cloth, Reverend Kagai was a common face in the colonial era education ordinance in the Eastern Aberdares District Education Board.

2.Education (Alliance Girls High School)

Her education began in Nyeri country after which her exemplary performance elevated her to realize admission from Alliance Girls High School.

3.Trained Teacher

After qualifying to join college, Lucy Kibaki settled for a teaching course. She joined Kamwenja Teachers College where she taught before considering a teaching job at Kambui College in Kiambu county. 

4.Dated Kibaki for 2 years



The late first lady met her significant other in 1960 after he had quit his job at Makerere University, Uganda, to try his hands in politics.

The two married after two years of dating.
