Meet 2 Highly Educated Deputy Governors in Kenya

The battle to succeed Kakamega Governor Wycliffe Oparanya has gained momentum with some of the region's veteran politicians lining up for the top seat.

One of those eyeing Oparanya's seat is his deputy, Philip Kutima.

A career academic, Prof. Kutima is one of the only two Deputy Governors with an academic rank of a professor.

Born 64 years ago in Malava constituency, Prof. Kutima made a name for himself in the a academic circles.

He is a professor of Food Science. He started his teaching career at Egerton University as a senior lecturer before moving to Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology where he climbed up the ranks to a position of a Professor.

He holds a Bachelor of Science degree from the Carthage College, USA, a Masters of Science degree from the Kansas State University and a PhD from North Carolina State University, USA.

Former Friends School Kamusinga student, Prof. Kutima joined politics in 2013 and was elected on a joint ticket with Oparanya. The pair defended the seat in 2017.

In the neighboring Bungoma County, Deputy Governor Charles Ngome is another academic top achiever.

Before joining politics in the run to the 2017 general election, Prof. Ngome had a long and distinguished career in the world of academics having served as Professor of Education at Kenyatta University.

Prof. Ngome boasts several academics publications in revered journals.

Today, Prof. Ngome is serving as Deputy to Governor Wycliffe Wafula Wangamati, himself an academic giant.
