UoN VC Professor Kiama Gitahi Forced to Rush to Court to Protect Himself From Being Arrested and Jailed

In December, the High Court sitting in Nairobi found that University of Nairobi Vice Chancellor professor Kiama Gitahi was in contempt of court.

This meant that he was at the risk of being arrested and jailed for disobedience of a court order that had barred him from going ahead with restructuring plans at the leading University in the country.

Prof Kiama together with Prof Winfred Kamau, Prof Bernard Mwangi, Prof Leonidah Kerubo and Prof Mohamud Jama were found in contempt of court in a ruling on December 10.

The changes saw the abolishment of some of the schools which rendered some of the people jobless since some faculties and colleges were subsequently abolished.

However, amid all that, he wants the Court of Appeal to protect him from the , High Court noting that the ruling of the lower court was not done in full consideration of the law.

Professor Kiama and the other officials are expected at the High Court in January 27th where they will be expected to face their sentencing by the court unless saved by the Court of Appeal.

His sentencing might bring a lot of leadership challenges at the University of Nairobi which has been the premier institution for quite a long time now.
