CBC is the current system of education which aims at liberating learners from traditional world of rote learning and cramming for National examinations like KCPE. It focuses on student's learning outcomes which covers theoretical knowledge, practical and technical skills, social competencies and ability to work with others.
Here are some of the challenges that are likely to be faced:
Inadequate learning and teaching materials.
CBC requires many textbooks, laptops and use of smartphone to access YouTube where you can watch some things like swimming after learning in class. Absence of these materials makes it hard for the learner to internalize what he has been taught.
Lack of parental support.
Most of the parents have undergone the old 8-4-4 system of education and even some haven't gone to school. This make it difficult for a parent to help her child in assignments and practical work that may involve technical skills and it leads to student's failure.
Large class sizes or high population of students in class.
This curriculum is learner centered hence it requires the teacher to reach every student individually. When the students are many in class it makes it difficult for the teacher to reach every learner and this makes most of the learners not being able to capture the content required of them.
Lack of information and technological skills among majority of teachers.
Most of the teachers are products of the old 8-4-4 system of education. This makes it difficult for them to know what is required to be taught to students undergoing a different curriculum. Also teachers from rural areas might face a challenge when operating the laptops.
For CBC education system to be implemented, the government and the policy makers have to employ more teachers who have been trained, ensure that resources required are readily available for both teachers and students and also create awareness on matters concerning this new curriculum.
