Competency-Based Curriculum(CBC) in Kenya: Implementation, challenges and expected outcome

The new system of education in Kenya has not been understood by parents. This Competency- Based Curriculum (CBC) was introduced to stakeholders some years back by the ministry of education. It is one of the best system of education and has teething problems like any other new curriculum. It also has good outcome if properly implemented.

The primary school teachers who are the immediate implementors have undergone the training on curriculum design by the Teachers Service Commission(TSC).

The ministry of education has supplied the learning materials for grade one to five but at a ratio of 1:2 or 1:3.

The teachers have embraced this new curriculum very well due to its diversity of learning areas. In grade five these learning areas include; Mathematics, English language, Kiswahili language or Kiswahili sign language for learners with learning impairment, Agriculture, Creative Arts (Art, Craft, Music), Home science, Religious education (CRE/IRE/HRE), Social studies (Citizenship, Geography, History) Other languages (French, German, Arabic, Chinese and Mother tongue), Pastoral program and Instructions(PPI). Out of all these subjects each learner's talent is identified, gathered for natured and empowered. The grade six learners will do their assessment for Kenya Primary School Assessment Education(KPSEA) next year September 2022 and transit to Junior Secondary School.

The fear with teachers is that the system may lose some of the subjects on the way like the 8-4-4 system which lost subjects like Physical Education,Art and Craft, Music and Home science.Again the ministry of education is planning the re-introduction of the multiple choice questions while the teachers and the learners want to have structured questions in the assessment. The ministry of education should provide all the necessary learning materials which include course books for indigenous languages and at a ratio of 1:1, funds for bundles to enable teachers access learning video clips, reliable source of power, and ICT experts at the school level and good infrastructure.

Some parents complain either because they do not understand the CBC, lazy, mean or want to shift their responsibility to the government.

For good implementation the government should employ enough teachers and pay them well. How can a trained teacher be paid a cross- salary of twenty thousand per month as an intern and the one employed on permanent terms be paid twenty seven thousand.

The outcome of this new curriculum will be expected to enable our country have self-reliant and responsible citizens.
