Beginning January 9, the Department of Education will conduct a national assessment to determine if students are ready for seventh grade.
Assessments will be held January 20 in all public and private elementary schools.
Belio Kipsang, chief secretary for basic education, said the main goal of the assessment is to ensure a 100 percent transition of students from sixth to seventh grade in the existing primary school.
He encouraged all involved to bring to the attention of school boards the Ministry of Education's guidelines for establishing secondary schools in Kenya.
In his statement, Kipsang asked Ministry of Education stakeholders to ensure that all public and private elementary schools are assessed according to the guidelines.
“Make sure properly registered institutions reach the threshold of 60% or higher,” he said.
On December 1, 2022, the CBC working group recommended that middle school students be placed in existing elementary schools.
In a report presented to the President, the Ministry of Education was instructed to add more classrooms and laboratories.
The construction of the laboratory will become a priority this year. Members of Congress have been asked to work to secure support for additional facilities, the report says.
The team, led by speaker Raphael Munavu, also recommended that final grades not be used to place students in the JSS.
Instead, it will be used as an assessment to track learning progress and provide feedback to education sector stakeholders in areas where intervention is needed, the Task Force report said.
