KSSSA Athletics get underway in Embu

Kenya Secondary School Sport Association (KSSSA) is holding its national athletics championships from Sunday 3 July to Wednesday 6 July in Kigari Teachers Training College.

The games will run alongside the Primary School athletics championships as the Ministry of Education begins an elaborate return to normalcy process in the extra curricular activities.

The last co-curricular events were held in March 2020 before Kenya announced her first positive Covid-19 case. A lock down on said activities in sports, drama and music festivals has seen the students stay in the cold.

"The championship opens the return-to-action plan. It will culminate in the selection of a team that will represent Kenya at the Federation of East African Secondary School Sports Association (FEASSSA) games set to be hosted in Arusha in September.

We lost two cohorts because of Covid-19 and we are grateful to the ministry for allowing action back. These games help federation's tap talent from the grassroot level and especially for athletics since the schools act as feeders to Athletics Kenya for competitors in international championships," offered Eliud Wambua, a minist of Education representative who sits in the AK youth sub-committee.

Wambua says that the athletics championship will pave way for the ball games, expected to begin in July when schools, currently on recess, reopen.

"Action is expected to resume when schools open on 11 July and culminate in late August, just in time for the FEASSSA games.

This is good because there are players who lost the chance to represent the country in international competitions across different disciplines and now we are able to give the current squad that chance," added Wambua.
