The First Deaf Person To Earn A PhD in Kenya

His name is Dr.Michael Ndurumo.He was born in Nyeri county and he is turning 69 years this month.He contracted menengitis at the age of 8 that left him deaf.Because of his zeal to achieve his dreams,he had to teach himself English by reading the dictionary because at that age,he had not yet learnt the language.Many highschools could not accept to admit him because of his condition when he was 17.Unfortunately,he was taken by an American missionary who fled and took him to a school called Kings Academy in the United States.

He then passed his exams and started his undergraduate degree studies in Gallaudet in 1973.He late moved to Peabody college of Vanderbilt university bin Tennessee in 1980 where he completed his masters and PhD.He worked as a pyschology professor at Garden-Webb university in North Carolina but he returned in Kenya in 1982.This made him the third person in Africa to obtain a PhD.

He has worked as a professor and lecturer of psychology in Moi University Eldoret,Maseno university,Daystar,Kenyatta university and Kenya Institute of Special Education.He is currently teaching at the University of Nairobi.He has made an impact in Kenya's education where he introduced the first distance special education course in UON,founder of many special education programmes, development of sign language where he has received many awards.Dr.Michael has also written research methodologies and books like Exceptional children.This is just a great motivation.Disability is not inability.
